Activated Carbon

Image

Coconut shell activated carbon is known for high hardness and low dust. Coconut shell activated carbon has a very high hardness and is more abrasion resistant than any other type. It is a totally natural, environmentally friendly product, that has a very small carbon foot print, since it is derived from coconut shells.

Activated carbon is obtained from the coconut shell, in which it goes through physical or chemical activation processes. Coconut shell activated charcoal tends to be microporous and adsorbs more efficiently the low molecular weight organic pollutants that are most present in well water

Scope
This Standard applies for Activated Carbon produced by using coconut shell charcoal.

Definitions
Activated Carbon: A family of carbonaceous substances which has adsorptive properties.
Adsorption: A process in which fluid molecules are concentrated on a surface by chemical or physical forces or both.
Ash: Residue remaining after combustion of a material under specified conditions.
Volatile matter: Mass loss of a dry material after degasifying under specified conditions

Raw Materials
Coconut shell
The hard ligneous part of the mature fruit known as endocarp which lies between the husk and the brown skin (Testa) of the kernel.
Coconut Shell Charcoal
The product obtained by charring coconut shells in a limited supply of air.

Definition of the product
Activated carbon shall be of following two classes:
a)    Steam activated carbon
b)    Chemically activated carbon
The above activated carbon classes shall be of following types:
Type 1 – Powdered activated carbon
Type 2 – Granular activated carbon
Type 3 – Spherical activated carbon
Type 4 – Pelleted activated carbon

Description
The color of the material shall be in black and free from visible foreign matter. Particle size of the material shall fall into one of the four types given above.
The material shall comply with the requirements given below.

Kinds of Activated Carbon

- Powder
- Granular
- Spherical
- Pelletized
- Block AC

Storage
Enough air gaps shall be provided among individual packs during storage to improve the air ventilation since the material is potentially flammable. Material shall be dry, and packs shall be kept away from volatile materials, oxidants (e.g., hydrogen peroxide, potassium permanganate, chlorates, nitrates) and moisture. Material shall be stored in buildings or compartments which are as fireproof as possible. Other oxidizing or flammable material shall not be stored in the same building or close perimeter.

Packaging and Marking
The material shall be packed in clean, sound and hermetically sealed sacks suitable for safe transportation and storage. All details of the product shall be marked legibly and indelibly.

Activated coconut carbon is a versatile ingredient with many benefits. It aids detoxification, helps with bloating, and improves kidney health by filtering out undigested drugs and toxins. It is also used in water filtration, both at home and in commercial settings, to remove unwanted substances such as fluoride. As an internal cleansing agent, it binds to bile acids, aiding in the removal of toxins and potentially reducing cholesterol levels. It is also a popular remedy for flatulence and bloating.

In skincare, activated coconut carbon is found in various products due to its effectiveness in removing bacteria, chemicals, and impurities, as well as regulating sebum, making it beneficial for acne and skin blemishes. It is also used to lower LDL cholesterol, reduce flatulence, and improve kidney function by reducing the amount of waste products that the kidneys have to filter. Finally, activated carbon is used as a sorbent to treat poisoning and overdose through oral ingestion, preventing toxins from being absorbed in the stomach and absorbing toxins from the stomach and intestines
